Poppy painting re-done

So my conclusion to the poppy painting I had done a few weeks ago is that I didn't like it, so tonight I decided to start over (mostly) and re-do the painting to more of my liking. Here's the redone piece. I hope you like it!

Final painting and tutorial

Sorry I've been a bit absent from the web, but my friend has been in town for the last week, so I was a bit preoccupied. However, I did manage to work on that painting this week and wanted to post up the process pictures I mentioned. Here's the completed painting and then the progress pictures. Enjoy!

Here's the preliminary sketch. I changed the hair a bit from the original in my sketchbook. I wanted to try something a little different.

Acrylic wash or my primary color. Here I started defining the facial features.

More detail.

Traced the hair to transfer it to the decorative paper I'll be using.

Using my elementary school skills to transfer the design onto the back of the paper so I can cut it out. I usually define the segments a bit here for large blocks of hair.

Putting down the first layer of paper. As you can see, they are large basic shapes that will get modified with either paint or more layers of paper.

After the paper was in place, I made some changes to the painting so that the flow was a little more consistent. I removed a couple of pieces that I didn't feel was working. I also added some non-painted pieces of paper on top to give the hair a little more depth.

Tests

Wanted to post something up here, so here's a color test I was doing for a potential new drawing. The pattern in the hair won't be the same, but it's what I had on hand while making this little mock-up. I've also included my pencil sketch. WOuld people be interested in seeing a step-by-step of me making a painting?

Backlogged

While digital work normally isn't my forte, painting and drawing with more traditional materials is what I'm most comfortable with and what I've been working with the longest. For a while I was interested in getting into the gallery world, and while it's no longer my priority, I would like to be able to show someday and will probably continue to work on paintings in the mean time. Wat inspired this was I had an idea for a series of portrait painting that would involved mixed media. Primarily, I wanted to use a different material for the hair. With my first attempts, I tried using fabric. While it did get the desired effect, it was pricey and pretty hard to work with. I soon realized I could use scrapbooking paper and still get the effect I was looking for. After some testes, I developed the look below:
